- This is the second line after Epinephrine within the ALS Paramedic scope of practice
- Antihistamines block the effects of histamine by blocking the receptors
- They do not displace the histamine already bound to the receptors
- The standard is Diphenhydramine (Benadryl)
- It is non-selective and blocks both H1 & H2 receptors
- The dose is 25-50 mg IV or IM
- Administer slowly if given IV
- Pediatric dose is 1mg/kg to a maximum single dose of 50mg IV or IM
- IM = Intramuscular
- IV = Intravenous
