- Obtaining data regarding the exact number of people who are affected by anaphylaxis is difficult.
- Some people who experience an anaphylactic reaction die during their first reaction to a substance, leaving no history of anaphylaxis.
- A recent review in the Archives of Internal Medicine examined the epidemiology of anaphylaxis in the United States.
- The authors obtained prevalence estimates of the four major types of anaphylaxis, namely:
- food,
- drugs,
- latex and
- insect stings.
- From this they estimated the number of people at risk for anaphylaxis in the United States, and estimated the number of deaths occurring per year from anaphylaxis.
- The data can be found in the tables on the following slides.[4]
