Aspirin

Atherosclerotic plaques

A) Plaque can build up on the lining of a blood vessel secondary to the many comorbidities a patient has
  • HTN, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, tobacco abuse
  • As long as the plaque is stable the platelets flow freely[11]
B) When a plaque is disrupted, platelets begin to adhere causing a blockage which may result in a cardiac event or even a cerebral event

The bottom line
Aspirin reduces these risks by interfering with platelet function
