This next study looked at the rate of aspirin administration by paramedics at baseline, protocol change and education

  • It retrospectively looked at a database for patients complaining of chest pain or providers suspicion for ACS
  • Data from 1999-2002
  • The study was divide into 3 periods
    1. baseline administration of ASA
    2. protocol change 
    3. education 
  • Period 1 15.1% received ASA (548/3635)
  • Period 2 26.8% received ASA (1941/7236)
  • Period 3 37% received ASA (749/2026)[9]


The Bottom line

  • ASA in this study is being under used
  • Protocol changes and education does make a statistical difference in the administration of ASA
  • The numbers are still too low for all that we know
