MIR (Myocardial Infarction Registry) MITRA (Maximal Individual Therapy of Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry)
- These registries are from a multicenter study in Germany of patients who had ST segment elevation with the diagnosis of myocardial infarction
- The data included 22,572 patients registered from 1994-1998
- 7.8% of these patients did not receive aspirin in the first 48 hours after admission
- According to the studies, the two reasons for withholding aspirin included:
- Clinical state (ie. code, unable to swallow or chew aspirin)
- Absolute and relative contraindications (ie. gastric ulcer)
- In hospital mortality for patients who did not receive aspirin was 27.2%
- The patients that did not receive aspirin where older with a mean age of 67 and more often were females 43.6% verse males 33.9%
- For the patients who received aspirin, the mortality rate was 11.1%
- It was noted that the use of aspirin was higher in facilities that had cardiology departments [15]
