Aspirin

Let's Look at the Studies

MIR and MITRA Studies
MIR (Myocardial Infarction Registry)
MITRA (Maximal Individual Therapy of Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry)
  • These registries are from a multicenter study in Germany of patients who had ST segment elevation with the diagnosis of myocardial infarction
  • The data included 22,572 patients registered from 1994-1998
  • 7.8% of these patients did not receive aspirin in the first 48 hours after admission
  • According to the studies, the two reasons for withholding aspirin included:
    1. Clinical state (ie. code, unable to swallow or chew aspirin)
    2. Absolute and relative contraindications (ie. gastric ulcer)
  • In hospital mortality for patients who did not receive aspirin was 27.2%
  • The patients that did not receive aspirin where older with a mean age of 67 and more often were females 43.6% verse males 33.9%
  • For the patients who received aspirin, the mortality rate was 11.1%
  • It was noted that the use of aspirin was higher in facilities that had cardiology departments [15]
