Aspirin

Rofecoxib (Vioxx) and Acetaminophen effects on aspirin
  • Rofecoxib is a delayed release NSAIDS
  • Rofecoxib did not affect the antiplatelet effects of aspirin
    • This was expected because rofecoxib is a COX-2 inhibitor
  • Acetaminophen also did not inhibit aspirins effect on platelets because it weakly binds to Cox-1 and is reversible
  • Ibuprofen can competitively bind to COX-1 and decrease aspirins ability to be cardioprotective, therefore it is not recommended to take ibuprofen in the face of cardiac ischemia
  • Rofecoxib and Acetaminophen do not appear to effect aspirins ability to be a cardioprotective medication [19]
But wait, Vioxx (aka Rofecoxib) was taken off the market September 2004 over safety concerns by the FDA
  • So the once safe cox-2 inhibiter maybe not safe after all
