Aspirin

The Second International Study of Infarct Survival (ISIS) demonstrated…
  • Giving aspirin in the first 24 hours after a myocardial infarction decreases the mortality rate at 5 weeks to 23% compared to a 25% decrease with the use of streptokinase.
  • Other journals have stated that using aspirin alone can decrease mortality rates by 34%.
  • ISIS looked at 10,108 patients from 1992-1993 with the diagnosis of myocardial infarction. The aspirin use was found to be 61% in the first 48 hours.[25]
  • Even though hospital rates of aspirin administration are high, there is room for marked improvement. This can be done by early aspirin administration by pre-hospital personnel.

What has also helped hospitals improve on aspirin administration, was the monitoring of core measures by hospitals which is reported to The Joint Commission
