The Pre-hospital Myocardial Infarction
A difficult diagnosis to make
  • There is currently no uniformity in testing in the pre-hospital setting.
  • 12 lead electrocardiograms (ECG) help enhance early diagnosis but are not used uniformly.
  • Some concerns have been expressed about 12 lead ECG use in the pre-hospital setting because of potential delay in transport time.
A study by Brown compared the on-scene times of two groups of paramedics.
  • One group of paramedics used the three lead ECG, the other used the twelve lead ECG.
  • The on-scene time for the paramedics using the three lead ECG was 22 minutes.
  • Those using the twelve lead ECG had an on-scene time of 21.85 minutes.[26]
