A study was conducted in California to assess the ability of the EMT Basic to provide selected advanced skills.
- 72 hours of training was completed
- Skills involved were Combitube insertion, glucometry, and automated external defibrillation
- The basic EMTs were also trained in the use of seven different medications including:
- Albuterol
- Nitroglycerin
- Naloxone
- Epinephrine
- Glucagon
- Activated charcoal
- Aspirin
- The study reviewed patient records and audiotapes of EMS calls
- They also compared emergency room diagnosis to pre-hospital treatment [29]
