Improving Emergency Medical Service
A study was conducted in California to assess the ability of the EMT Basic to provide selected advanced skills.
  • 72 hours of training was completed
  • Skills involved were Combitube insertion, glucometry, and automated external defibrillation
  • The basic EMTs were also trained in the use of seven different medications including:
    1. Albuterol
    2. Nitroglycerin
    3. Naloxone
    4. Epinephrine
    5. Glucagon
    6. Activated charcoal
    7. Aspirin
  • The study reviewed patient records and audiotapes of EMS calls
  • They also compared emergency room diagnosis to pre-hospital treatment [29]
