COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus

Cough
A cough is a normal, spontaneous reflex your body uses to protect the airway. The problem when dealing with an infectious respiratory virus is that when you cough, the virus spreads. A cough can propel air out of your lungs and mouth at speeds up to 50 miles-per-hour. As early as preschool we are taught to “cover your cough” by coughing into a tissue, your elbow or “looking the other way.” As we will discuss later, COVID-19 is able to live on surfaces for several hours on end. Coughing into your elbow, then having someone come in contact with you, puts that person at risk for transmission.
