COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus

What’s in a name?
The name “corona” stems from the latin translation for “crown” as a result of how the virus looks under a microscope. There are crown-like protein spikes attached to the envelope (cell wall) that surrounds the genetic material that make up the virus. Novel meaning “new” allows the full “Novel Coronavirus” to come together. In February 2020, the name of the virus was announced as severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and then labeled as a disease (COVID-19). [2]
