Chemical Suicide

Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN)
  • HCN is a byproduct of the combustion of any organic material containing carbon and nitrogen.
    • Commonly found during the overhaul phase of structural firefighting in today's environment
  • The enzyme cytochromoxidase is responsible for the energy-providing processes in the cell where oxygen is utilized.
  • HCN toxicity is caused by the cyanide ion, which halts cellular respiration.
  • If the poisoning occurs rapidly, there is no time for symptom development and the exposed persons may suddenly collapse and die. [7]
