Chemical Suicide

Chemical and Detergent Suicide

  • Police, Fire, and EMS should be aware that these types of suicides typically take place in a confined space such as a vehicle, closet or small bathroom.
  • Chemicals are usually placed in a bucket and mixed together. As the mixture is combined or becomes agitated (i.e. with extrication/movement), Hydrogen Sulfide Gas is released.
  • In some cases, the patient places biohazard signs around the vehicle to warn responders.
  • Patients have also placed duct tape or similar material around the windows and vents to contain the gas.
