Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Case Scenario
You respond to the home of a 58-year-old male who was found unresponsive by his wife.  He is pulseless and his wife is screaming, “don't push on his chest or he will die.”  The patient has a wire coming out of their chest attached to a mechanical device.

Consider your initial actions?  CPR?  Attach defibrillator?  Contact Medical Control?
It can be agreed that more information is needed. Consider the level of care that you provide and assess the need for additional resources.  Your Scene Size Up begins when the call comes in.  "Pre-planning" or knowing where the truly "sick" patients live within your city or town can help determine the resources provided upon initial dispatch.
