Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Electrocardiogram
  • An ECG cannot be used as a primary clinical assessment tool
  • LVAD patients can have terminal rhythms for days
    • Ventricular Tachycardia / Ventricular Fibrillation
  • Remember, the right side of the heart is still functioning and able to have complications that would affect preload and afterload
  • Build a clinical picture based on patient presentation and device operation / troubleshooting
