Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Anatomy of the Heart
  • To better understand the functionality of a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) we need to first review the basic anatomy and physiology of the heart.
  • The heart can simply be considered a two-sided pump consisting of two atria and two ventricles;
  • The heart muscle is known as the myocardium;
  • The layers that make up the wall are the pericardium, parietal pericardium and visceral pericardium. [8, 9]
