Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Anatomy of the Heart
Ventricles
  • These are the thick-walled lower chambers of the heart;
  • Separated by the inter-ventricular septum;
  • The right ventricle receives blood from the right atrium and pumps blood to the lungs;
  • The left ventricle receives oxygen rich blood from the left atrium and pumps blood to the body. [8, 9]
The ventricles play a pivotal role in the patient with an implanted LVAD.  As we will discuss later, the placement of some of the mechanical parts of the LVAD will be direct into the left ventricle.
