Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) is a form of non-invasive ventilation used to assist patients in respiratory distress of various etiologies. CPAP adds 5 -15 cm H2O (centimeters of water) to every breath; inspiration and expiration. This helps keep the alveoli open and increases intra-thoracic pressure. An increased intra-thoracic pressure causes a decrease venous return to the heart, decreasing preload which will lower blood pressure. Benefits include a decreased mortality, decreased rate of intubation and decreased ventilator associated infections.
