Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
Impaired function of the left and right ventricles can lead to cardiomegly (enlarged heart) which can cause an irregular heartbeat.  The irregular heart beat can cause the heart to lose strength during ventricular systole (contraction).  Cardiac pacemakers are surgically implanted to ensure the synchronous contraction of the ventricles.  This coordinated heart pumping increase the effectiveness of blood flow.
