Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Introduction to Left Ventricular Assist Device
 (LVAD)
  • Device used as a first line intermediate-to-chronic left ventricular assist device
  • Requires a less invasive surgical procedure
  • Completely wearable system
  • Rotary pump that produces 8,000 to 15,000 rotations per minute
  • 10 – 15 times that of a regular heart
  • Device can change pump rotations based on the body’s demand
    • Flow based on preload and afterload
  • Most LVADs provide Continuous Flow
