Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Basic Selection Criteria
Basic selection criteria will be dependent upon the type of LVAD candidates
  • Bridge-to-transplant vs Destination therapy
Some examples of selection criteria include:
  • Be an active heart transplant candidate
  • Severe symptomatic heart failure despite aggressive optimal medical therapy
  • Be on maximal inotropic support, with or without IABP
    • Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
    • The IABP is a mechanical device that sits within the aorta and counterpulsates which increases forward blood flow and increasing blood flow to the coronary arteries during diastole (deflation)
  • Systolic blood pressure <80mmHg or Pulmonary Capillary wedge pressure above 20mmHg
  • Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) less than 25 percent
