Basic selection criteria will be dependent upon the type of LVAD candidates
- Bridge-to-transplant vs Destination therapy
Some examples of selection criteria include:
- Be an active heart transplant candidate
- Severe symptomatic heart failure despite aggressive optimal medical therapy
- Be on maximal inotropic support, with or without IABP
- Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)
- The IABP is a mechanical device that sits within the aorta and counterpulsates which increases forward blood flow and increasing blood flow to the coronary arteries during diastole (deflation)
- Systolic blood pressure <80mmHg or Pulmonary Capillary wedge pressure above 20mmHg
- Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) less than 25 percent
