Heart Failure and the Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD)

Implanted Blood Pumps
As mentioned previously one model of the LVAD works on the principle of the Archemedes' Screw.  Another LVAD which is gaining popularity is the HeartWare.  This LVAD functions similar to a centrifugal pump.  This is where an impeller which accelerates blood by whirling blood through the impeller vanes which adds centrifugal force and acceleration.  When the blood is spun in a circle it accelerates outward from the center due to centrifugal force.  The impeller vanes (blades) push the blood in a directed pathway.
