As mentioned previously one model of the LVAD works on the principle of the Archemedes' Screw. Another LVAD which is gaining popularity is the HeartWare. This LVAD functions similar to a centrifugal pump. This is where an impeller which accelerates blood by whirling blood through the impeller vanes which adds centrifugal force and acceleration. When the blood is spun in a circle it accelerates outward from the center due to centrifugal force. The impeller vanes (blades) push the blood in a directed pathway. | | | | | | | | | | | | |
