  • Medications that are taken orally are absorbed through the stomach.  
  • These medications enter the “portal circulation” and are transported to the liver. 
    • Metabolism within the smooth endoplasmic reticulum occurs primarily in the liver.
  • Liver enzymes then breakdown most of the medication molecules, leaving only a small portion of the medication to enter central circulation.
