Management of ACS for the ALS Provider

Nitroglycerin (NTG)

NTG is a potent vasodilator that causes vasodilation of the arterioles and veins in the periphery.  It also reduces preload and afterload, thereby decreasing the workload of the heart and decreasing the myocardial oxygen demand.

NTG is available in tablet, spray and paste forms.  The tablet and spray forms are to be administered to the ACS patient at a dose of 0.4mg (400mcg*) SL (sublingual).  This dose can be repeated every 3-5 minutes for a maximum of three doses.**

*mg = milligrams; mcg = micrograms
**Ensure to follow your local protocol.
