Management of Hemorrhagic Shock for pre-hospital providers

Tranexamic acid
The newest adjunct in prehospital medicine for the management of hemorrhage is a medication called Tranexamic Acid (TXA). TXA is an anti-fibrinolytic that prevents clot destruction due to the abnormal activation of the clotting cascade in the coagulopathic patient. It must be understood that TXA does not form clots, nor does it promote clot formation. It reinforces and protects clots that are already formed from fibrinolysis. TXA has been proven to reduce morbidity and mortality from hemorrhage. [14][27][28]
