EMS Management of Suspected Stroke
The American Heart Association has developed EMS resources have been designed to maximize stroke recovery.  An outline of these clinical assessments and actions are:
  • Support ABCs: airway, breathing, circulation.  Administer oxygen as indicated
  • Perform prehospital stroke assessment
    • Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale
    • Los Angeles Prehospital Stroke Screen (LAPSS)
    • Los Angeles Motor Scale
    • Miami Emergency Neurological Deficit Scale

  • Establish & record time of patient last known normal
  • Obtain medical history including medications, recent illness, injuries, surgeries, etc.
  • Rapid transport (consider triage to a center with a stroke unit if appropriate; consider bringing a witness,family member, or caregiver)
  • Alert receiving hospital stroke center “CODE STROKE”
  • Check glucose level if possible [58]
