Ischemic Stroke Syndromes
Basilar Artery Stroke
This stroke sub type produces devastating results.  This "locked-in" syndrome causes complete muscular paralysis of the body, except for upward gaze.  The risk of death is very high with this type of stroke.

Of note, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is an amazing book, written by Jean-Dominique Bauby, a successful and charismatic editor-in-chief of French Elle, after he suffered a basilar artery stroke.  His speech therapist and friends would read him an alphabet, and Bauby would blink at the letter he wanted. He formed words, phrases and sentences, and ultimately, over the course of two months, completed his memoir. [45][46]
