New research by the American Stroke Association shows the traditional risk factors, such as high blood pressure, smoking and diabetes, impact people of various races and genders differently. [64]
A study of more than 2,100 adults age 18-49 in Baltimore-Washington DC found:
Stroke incident due to high blood pressure: 45.8% for African American men 26.5% for African American woman 17.2% for white men 19.3% for white women
Stroke incident among smokers: 19.1% for African American men 23.8% for African American woman 19.7% for white men 32.5% for white women
Stroke incident among diabetics: 17.2% for African American men 13.4% for African American woman 10.5% for white men 7.4% for white women
