Genetic factors play a role in conditions such as high blood pressure, stroke, and other related conditions. Several genetic disorders can also cause a stroke; single-gene disorders may cause rare, hereditary disorders for which stroke is a primary manifestation.
Research into risk factors and the genetics of stroke have identified:
- those at risk for stroke
- ways to target at-risk populations for stroke prevention
The chance of stroke is greater in people with a family history of stroke or genetic factors which may increase the risk of stroke, for example, someone with predisposition for high blood pressure (hypertension) or diabetes is at higher risk.
Some of these include: African-Americans face higher risks for high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke; approximately 1/3 of Hispanics have high blood pressure, and nearly 50% will battle high blood cholesterol. [66] |
