Stroke

Modifiable Risk Factors
As previously discussed, non-modifiable risk factors for stroke include age, sex, race, history and genetics. In contrast, there are factors which can be controlled, managed and treated. This could be anything from a change in patient behavior, activity, diet and / or exercise. Some examples of modifiable risk factors include:
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diet
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Obesity
  • Coronary artery heart disease
  • Atrial Fibrillation
  • Excessive alcohol use
  • Illicit drug use
  • Physical inactivity [57]
