Here is an example of Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) protocol (from an ALS only 911 agency) for a suspected stroke. Dispatchers must recognize the need for ALS based upon specific questioning and dispatch as appropriate. Primary dispatch (getting the ambulance to the address) must occur rapidly and then the 911 dispatcher must return to ask case specific questions. Note that the questions focus on breathing quality and begin to ask questions pertinent to a stroke (i.e. using a preshopital stroke screening assessment tool). This information can be relayed to responders and help cut down the on-scene time.
