Stroke

Los Angeles Motor Scale (LAMS)

This scale rapidly quantifies the severity of a stroke in the field and also predicts the functional outcome. The LAMS score is comparable to the full NIH Stroke Scale.  Research data shows that a patient with a LAMS score greater than or equal to four has a seven times increased chance that the symptoms are caused by a stroke.

The use of a particular tool is likely governed by local EMS protocols and medical oversight.  EMS personnel must be familiar with the particular screening tool used by their organization. Regular routine practice and mock scenarios serve to increase the efficiency and reliability of using this tool in the prehospital setting. [4]
