Goals for EMS Response

The 8 D's of Stroke Care

EMS functions primarily in the first four D's; a clear understanding of their role will facilitate the delivery of efficient and high quality stroke care. Even though EMS may only be involved in the first four, we need to appreciate the in-hospital "D's" so we can do our part to decrease last known well - door time.


Detection Rapid recognition of stroke systems
Dispatch Early activation and dispatch of EMS by 911
Delivery Rapid EMS identification, management, and transport
Door Transport to stroke center, if applicable
Data Rapid triage, evaluation, and management in ED
Decision Stroke expertise and therapy selection
Drug Appropriate medical treatment
Disposition Rapid admission to the stroke unit or critical care unit
