Additional Data Collection
EMS may be able to obtain additional beneficial information to facilitate stroke care. Collection of additional data should never delay on scene or transport times however. [25]
Blood pressure measurements on scene and en route can assist in care of the patient upon arrival at the hospital. Data do not support having EMS treat high blood pressure. Thrombolytic therapy is contraindicated beyond set parameters of blood pressure (185/110).
Blood glucose is an important piece of information. Hypoglycemia can mimic stroke by causing focal neurologic deficits. Symptomatic hypoglycemia is generally treated en route based on protocol.
