Stroke Systems of Care

Telestroke and Telemedicine

Fewer than 25% of all people in the United States live within 30 minutes of a primary stroke center. The advent of technologies that allow high-level care from a distance has significantly improved medical care, in general.  The advent of telemedicine and, specifically, telestroke care allows specialized care delivery at remote and rural locations that prohibit rapid transport to a PSC.  Telemedicine allows facilities that utilize this technology to be stroke-prepared.  The use of Internet connections, video conferencing, and teleradiology services significantly elevates the level of care provided at these non-PSC hospitals.  Rapid consultation with neurologists and stroke specialists provide expert care for stroke patients in these locations.

Knowledge of which hospitals fit into these different categories is important for EMS personnel.  Transport to the highest level of stroke care is advised unless it imposes significant delay in initiating care. [2][6][11]
