Summary of Prehospital Care of Stroke Patients
  • Rapid transportation to the closest appropriate stroke-ready facility.
  • Utilize an assessment tool such as the Cincinnati Prehospital Stroke Scale, LAPSS or LAMS.
  • Maintain circulation, airway, and breathing (CAB).
  • Obtain concise history of the events, including onset of symptoms.  Utilize a family member or witness.
  • Assess blood pleasure, oxygen saturation and glucose if time and skills permit.
  • Respond rapidly.
  • Triage, assess, stabilize, and treat the patient appropriately.
  • Transport with the highest priority.
  • Notify the receiving hospital en route.
  • Present the patient to the ED and share concise information.
  • Obtain feedback about the outcome.
