- The first step is to obtain a thorough history; this includes identifying:
- The onset of the current symptoms
- Is there an increased use of rescue inhaler?
- Recent hospital visits, missed days of work and or school
- Precipitating factors (i.e., upper respiratory tract infection, allergies, exposure to irritants, drugs or foods)
- Inquire about past treatments (i.e., recent hospitalizations, prior intubations, steroid use)
