Triage tag systems are an efficient way to sort patients based on priority. The system uses five color-coded categories.
- Red – (immediate) Indicates a patient is in need of immediate care or the patient will die. These patients may have airway complications or severe shock.
- Yellow – (observation) Indicates a category that allows for delay of patient care. Examples would include fractures, moderate bleeding, and patients requiring care but are stable.
- Green – (wait) Patients that are considered “walking wounded”.
- Black – (expectant) Patients that are determined to be deceased. These patients have no vitals and may have massive head and/or chest trauma.
- White – (dismiss) Patients with minor injuries that do not require medical treatment. [8]
