Special Considerations

Pregnant women requiring restraint should be transported in a semi-reclining or left lateral recumbent position.  In restrained supine, hypotension may develop as the weight of the uterus is being placed onto the vena cava restricting bloodflow to the heart.  This is known as supine hypotension syndrome. 

When restraining children, always attempt to involve parents when restraining children.  In addition, ensure that the restraints have a proper fit to the extremities.
