Important Landmarks

The cuneiform and corniculate cartilages are important landmarks when performing direct laryngoscopy in a potentially difficult airway.  If the vocal cords cannot be directly visualized as a result of anatomy, the corniculate sit at the base of the vocal cords.  Therefore, if all you can visualize are the cuneiform and corniculate you can be assured that the vocal cords are anterior and you may be able to deflect or bend your ETT anterior to pass it through.  [2]
