Pediatric Airway

Children have several differences in respiratory physiology as compared to adults.

  • Increased respiratory rates
  • Increased chest wall compliance
  • Decrease lung elastic recoil
  • Decreased functional residual capacity
  • Increased oxygen consumption and metabolism

Infants and children will consume 2-3 times more oxygen per kilogram of body weight than will adults. [2, 4]
