For proper airway alignment, when placed supine, the top of the patient"s shoulder should be parallel to the middle part of the ear. By drawing an imaginary line between these two landmarks you can assume that the laryngeal and pharyngeal axis are aligned. The thyromental distance should be measured from the mentum (protruding part of the chin) to the thyroid cartilage. A distance greater than 6cm will suggest the airway will be easier than normal.
