The staples of the BLS airway begin with the Oropharyngeal and Nasopharyngeal airways. Both the OPA and NPA have been utilized successfully and without difficulty throughout the years. However, there is no published data that proves their benefit or lack thereof, during cardiac arrest. The 2010 American Heart Association ECC Guidelines recommended a continued use of OPA / NPA when performing bag-mask ventilations for a patient in cardiac arrest. The use of NPA should be avoided in suspected basilar skull fracture as a result of two cases that reported inadvertent intracranial placement. [12-15]
