Sellick's Maneuver

The routine use of cricoid pressure (Sellick"s Maneuver) is no longer recommended to prevent aspiration during cardiac arrest.  Twenty-one manikin studies showed that many providers applied less cricoid pressure than has been shown to be effective and that many other providers applied too much pressure.  One study showed the use of cricoid pressure in anesthetized patients prevented correct placement and ventilation with alternate airway devices such as the LMA.
