As previously discussed, the AHA does not recommend the routine use of cricoid pressure. Those difficult airway patients who present with an anterior trachea that cannot be easily seen by direct laryngoscopy have, in some cases, benefited from BURP. BURP is displacement of the larynx in three specific directions and stands for:
- Backwards (posteriorly against the vertebrae)
- Upwards (superiorly)
- Rightwards (laterally to the patient"s right)
- Pressure
