Gum Elastic Bougie

The gum elastic bougie is a long flexible "stylette-like" device with an angled tip, that when placed posterior to the epiglottis but anterior to any other glottic structure should deflect into the trachea.  When properly placed, the angled tip of the bougie will rub against the tracheal rings creating a vibration felt at the proximal end of the device.  Once the placement of the bougie is confirmed the ETT is placed over the bougie and slid into place.
