Anatomy Review

The facial bones such as the zygoma, maxilla and mandible provide structure and support to the beginning of the airway.  It is important to assess these structures and ensure they are in tact.  These structures are needed to provide an adequate mask seal when assisting ventilations with a bag-valve-mask.  In addition, maxilla & mandible fractures can make standard laryngoscopy a difficult task.  [1, 3]
