- Causative organism is Mycobacterium tuberculosis also known as tubercle bacilli
- It is part of the mycobacteria family
- Most common cause of TB in the US is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Other mycobacteria that are less common to cause TB but can are;
- M. bovis, M. microti, M. africanum, M. canetti
- Weakly gram-positive obligate aerobic rod with acid fast staining properties
- Organism can multiply once every 12-24 hours[5]
