- First Trimester: A mother’s diabetes can result in birth defects (major organs such as brain and heart) and an increased rate of miscarriage.
- Second and Third Trimester: Diabetes in the mother can result in excess growth of the baby, due to over-nutrition. This can also lead to low blood sugar levels in the baby after birth due to the lose of these high blood sugar levels form the mother.
- Birth: Having a large baby increases risks during labor and delivery. Such cases may require caesarean deliveries or, in the case of vaginal birth, the baby may be at increased risk for trauma to the shoulders. [9]
