Endocrine Diabetic Emergencies

Determine Blood Glucose level:

If glucose is less than 70 mg/dL, administer dextrose 50%, 12.5-25 grams IV push. Additional dextrose 50% may be administered as necessary. If no IV access, administer glucagon 1-2 mg IM or nasal for suspected hypoglycemia.

The EMT must be prepared for the patient to vomit but even so supplemental oxygen and/or ventilatory assistance will be one of the necessary procedures. It is important to maintain a steady body temperature and to place the patient in a position of comfort, lying on their side.
